Gonzalo Samitier, MD

Dr. Samitier recently incorporated to – INSTITUTO CUGAT -, a Multidisciplinary Sports Medicine Private Group in Barcelona where a multitude of professional soccer players and many others sports professional and recreative practitioners look for medical and surgical advice.

His previous role was as the Head of the Upper Extremity and Sports Medicine Division at Hospital General de Villalba in Madrid before joining the Instituto Cugat in 2019. Dr Samitier has a previous formal fellowship training in the US for two years (University of Florida and Henry Ford) and stayed for 1 year in France (Annecy) with Laurent Lafosse specializing in the treatment of advanced Shoulder and Knee problems, and particularly in young active patients with a focus on regenerative medicine and biologic alternatives to surgery. He also serves as the head of the Orthopedic Master’s Arthroscopy Training Program of the Spanish Arthroscopy Association and trains residents and fellows in sports medicine and research. He lectures nationally and internationally and holds several leadership positions in prominent sports medicine societies and journals as ISAKOS, ESSKA and KSSTA, he is also European Board Examiner. Through his basic science and clinical research, he has developed several innovative techniques for the treatment of shoulder and knee conditions. He has published more than 35 articles and book chapters related to knee, shoulder and sports injuries.
